Blueberries

I started selling blueberries at the age of ten. For the first week of August I would get daily shipments from the farm up in Farmington and I would sell the berries to tourists from the comfort of my driveway in Raymond. Because of the "U" shape of our driveway, I was able to market myself as "Elijah's Drive Through Blueberry Stand", the only drive through blueberry stand in the world. I was able to undercut all my competitors by $2/quart by buying directly from the farmer in the first year and I was able to undercut them more as their overhead went up and mine stayed the same.

My berries were also of much higher quality, being of the wild lowbush variety that is common in Maine. They are smaller, sweeter, and easier to cook with. My berries were also much fresher as I sold most of them within 48 hours of being raked off the bush.

The business became a hit in the region and year after year tourists and locals alike flocked to my blueberry stand in the first week of August. The blue letters that spell "Blueberries" across my garage (originally blue duct tape) have become a landmark to all traffic headed North on Route 85. My sisters now sell the berries and take the profit but in order to be successful they still use my name: "Elijah's Blueberries". 2010 marks our 9th year in business.

Hebron Academy

I attended Hebron Academy from 2003 - 2009. The school became a home for me and still is a home for my family. I lived on campus for 2 of those years and worked on campus for 2 summers and a winter. My father continues to work there and my sisters both attend there. The people there were important to me and they made me feel important to them. It was truly a wonderful experience. I graduated in May of 2009 with some of the best friends I will ever have.

Carnegie Mellon Univeristy

I am now a student in Carnegie Mellon's School of Architecture. You can read more about my work there under "The Architect" heading. Being in Pittsburgh has opened me up as a personality and has opened my eyes to many things that I would never come into contact with in Maine. It is a great experience. The work at the University is tough I enjoy the strong sense of accomplishment when I complete it. The Architecture BA program is 5 years here and is fully accredited.

About this site

I designed and built this site in late 2008. I did the majority of the code manually but I now use Adobe Dreamweaver to quickly and easily update the site. I try to represent as much of myself and as much of my work as possible. The site is like a continuous project with constant revisions to it. Any input is valued. I've tossed around the idea of a complete overhaul this summer but I think I'd rather continue adding content to this one.
